This presentation deals with the employment of shadows through digital media technologies in creating temporary zones for participation, virtual memory, collective pleasure, temporary implementation of ephemeral images and transmitting time based and audience specific information. It addresses the possibilities in which the use of shadow functions as a transitory image, while being manifested at the existing time, but indicating a trace of the past. It shows examples from a variety of artists using similar tools and strategies to deal with the ambiguities in relation to the notions of contemporaneity, temporality, durability and permanence.
